On Drawing

Charcoal and graphite on white paper. Five tools - that's all: a graphite pencil, an odd waxed charcoal pencil that leaves a hard black line, carbonized willow twigs leaving a wonderful soft dusty mark, graphite powder applied with a soft brush and various erasers. Then a love affair with the model - lasting an hour, maybe many hours - a strange exchange of beauty and dust. Sometimes these affairs last for years. What's left on the paper is what remains. The best models are skilled static actors, silently vibrating with sharp intelligence or emotional depth. Their trade is a living koan -“stay perfectly still and do something intensely engaging.”
